"I didn’t really think that a prep course for the SAT was going to help a straight A student like myself.  However, I soon discovered that I was very wrong. The STEPS course not only helped me prepare for the subject matter tested on the SAT, it helped me to familiarize myself with the test format and get comfortable with the test-taking process. Because I took the STEPS prep course, I went into the test with the confidence I needed, and although I had some testing-day jitters, I was able to remain calm because I had practiced so much with the testing format.  As I was taking the test, I saw questions and thought to myself, “Before I took the STEPS class, I would have picked this answer, but now I know that it’s this one!” I had taken a practice test previously, and my score improved by 190 points on the real thing.  I scored BIG, and I know I owe much of my score to the teachers and Ms. Clark at STEPS Community Prep School. Thanks Everyone!"

"I am an ESL student and struggled with the SAT test.  I was able to increase my verbal score by 130 points after I completed the STEPS prep course."

SAT COMBINED PREP COURSE

Writing, Critical Reading, Math

Our combined course provides students with a comprehensive review of concepts, test-taking approaches, and focused sets of practice questions. Students can increase their understanding of the new SAT through detailed descriptions and review of the math, critical reading, and writing sections of the test. All courses are taught by PUSD high school math and English teachers who have been trained and certificated by Collegeboard. Class size is limited to eight students to maximize instruction and allow for individual attention.

Writing
Students are provided with intensive study of the essay requirements for the new SAT and are prepared for the pressure of a timed-writing assessment. Students are given practice essay prompts and are guided through the process of developing a coherent, focused essay within the 25 minute time limit. Assessment is based on the College Board essay scoring criteria.

Students also review skills for the multiple-choice section that measures their competency in identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, and improving paragraphs.

Reading
Students are given instruction, practice tests, and strategies for improving their performance on this section which includes sentence completion and passage-based reading assessments.

Math
The math section of the course is taught by teachers holding advanced degrees in mathematics and credentials for teaching all levels of required high school mathematics.

The new SAT includes expanded math topics, such as exponential growth, absolute value, and functional notation, with greater emphasis on such other topics as linear functions, manipulations with exponents, and properties of tangent lines.

Quantitative comparisons will be eliminated.

Classrooms are equipped with a computer networking system so each student has his or her own desktop computer. Teacher and student computers are networked together to maximize instructional time, and provide immediate feedback for optimal learning. Students are also given access to on-line support and practice test assessment from the CollegeBoard website.
