Steps invites 3rd through 11th graders to participate in a unique problem solving experience that will challenge and enrich any math enthusiast. Students who participate in Math Matters will learn new skills and techniques while working with multiple levels of rich mathematical problems in a collaborative environment.

Sample Math Matters Problems

Sample Math Olympiad Problem: In this correct addition of two 2-digit numbers, A and B represent different digits. Find the value of digit A.



Sample Math Counts Problem: John has a bag of coins in which he keeps all of his pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters and no other coins. The mean value of the coins in his bag is 20 cents. If he were to add one quarter to his bag, the new mean value would be 21 cents. How many quarters did he originally have in his bag?



AIME qualifier problem: Consider the paper triangle whose vertices are (0,0), (34,0) and (16,24). The vertices of its midpoint triangle are the midpoints of its sides. A triangular pyramid is formed by folding the triangle along the sides of its midpoint triangle. What is the volume of this pyramid?
